This utility upgrades the Blu-ray Disc Home Theatre firmware to version 011 and provides the following benefits:
Improvements over firmware version 010:
- Improves BD-ROM playability.
Benefits provided by previous upgrades and included in version 011:
- Adds slow and freeze frame functions during Blu-ray Disc and DVD playback.
- Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.

Before You Start
Check the Current Firmware Version
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- If the system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the Sony® Blu-ray Disc™ screen is displayed on the television before proceeding to the next step.
- At the xross media bar™ (XMB™ menu), use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
- The firmware version currently installed on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system will be listed on the television screen.
If the last three digits of the version number are 011 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

How To Get the Firmware Upgrade
There are three ways to obtain the BD/DVD Home Theatre system firmware upgrade:
- Network Upgrade:
- The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Upgrade method.
- You will need to connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Please see the Network Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.
- Create an Upgrade Disc:
- If you cannot connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
- Please click the Download Now link at the top or bottom of this page to download the firmware upgrade.
- Please see the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section below, for more information.
- A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
- Request an Upgrade Disc
- If you cannot connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
- If you are unable to create the upgrade disc, you can purchase one from the True Manuals web site.
- After you receive the disc, please see the Disc Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.

Network Upgrade Instructions
The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Upgrade method to upgrade the BD/DVD Home Theatre system firmware.

Important Notes
- If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- WARNING! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- WARNING! Do not power off the BD/DVD Home Theatre system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware Upgrade section above for information about firmware upgrade disc options. - In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions
WARNING! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
- Connect the "LAN(100)" terminal on the system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
- At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network Update" and then press the ENTER button.
- The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
- Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
- The download process starts and the download screen is displayed on the television.
- During the download the message "DOWNLOAD */9" is displayed on the television and on the system front display.
Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the download progress. - After the download is complete, the upgrade starts and "UPDATE" appears on the system front panel display.
- While the upgrade is installing the message "UPDATE */9" is displayed on the system front display.
Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the upgrade progress. - The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE!" appears on the system front panel display.
WARNING! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair. - The BD/DVD Home Theatre system will automatically power off.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system
- check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 011, the firmware upgrade was successful.
If you have questions or require assistance, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
- Disconnect, and then reconnect, the AC power cord.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- Follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.
- Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN" terminal on the system and to the Internet source.
- Check the BD/DVD Home Theatre system network settings and confirm that the system has its own IP address.
Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field. - Follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.
Network Upgrade FAQ
Q: "SYSTEM ERR" or "UPDATE NG" is displayed on the system front panel display.
A: Please perform the following procedure:
If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
Q: When running network upgrade, the television displays the message, "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
A: There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
Q: The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
A: Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system, and then follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.
Q: The network upgrade process has two parts, first the download and then the upgrade. If, after the download part is finished, the firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running after more than 30 minutes.
A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc
If you cannot connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.

- Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware upgrade. The system may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc. - Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:

Download and Disc Creation Instructions
- Download the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP file is 48,165,706 bytes.
- Right-click the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP file, and click "Properties".
- On the "UPDATA_13X011.ZIP Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "45.9 MB (48,165,706 bytes)".
Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal. - If the file size is different than the "48,165,706 bytes", please download the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP file again.
- Double-click the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP file to extract the firmware files to a temporary directory (please note this directory for reference).
Note: Two files will be extracted: BD13-VUD.BIN and SONY_VUP.ID - Write the two extracted files to the root of a CD-R. Please consult the instructions for your CD writing software for details.
- The upgrade disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize CD (No further writing possible)" in your CD burning software to finalize the upgrade disc.
Note: Click here for instructions on how to burn the upgrade CD using utilities that came with your operating system. - If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.
Disc Upgrade Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using a disc. The steps are the same whether you downloaded the firmware and created the disc, or whether you ordered the disc from Sony.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions
WARNING! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- Place the upgrade disc in the system, and close the disc tray.
- After the disc is loaded, the message, "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
- Use the remote control to select "OK", and then press the ENTER button.
- The upgrade process starts and "UPDATE" appears on the system front panel display.
- While the upgrade is installing the message "UPDATE */9" is displayed on the system front display.
Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the upgrade progress. - The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE!" appears on the system front panel display.
WARNING! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair. - Remove the upgrade disc from the system.
- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 011, the firmware upgrade was successful.
If The Upgrade Disc Does Not Eject
If the upgrade disc does not eject even though "COMPLETE!" is displayed, please follow the steps below.
- Simultaneously press and hold the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the main unit.
Note: Pressing the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the remote control does not work. It is necessary to press the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system. - Keep pressing the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button until the disc tray opens.
- Remove the disc.

Disc Upgrade FAQ
Q: "SYSTEM ERR" or "UPDATE NG" is displayed on the system front panel display.
A: Please perform the following procedure:

- Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
- Follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again.

Q: "UPDATE" is not displayed on the system front panel display when the upgrade disc is inserted.
A: Remove the upgrade disc from the system and delete the upgrade file you downloaded to your computer. Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc and then follow the steps in the Disc Upgrade Instructions section to install the firmware upgrade.
Q: The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
A: Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system, and then follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again.
Q: When I double click on the UPDATA_13X011.ZIP upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the BD13-VUD.BIN and SONY_VUP.ID files are not created.
A: The download may have failed. Delete the file you downloaded to your computer and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc
Q: The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).
