Before You Start


How to Check if You Need the Update

  1. Power on the TV.
  2. On the TV remote control, press the "HOME" button to open the TV Home Menu.
  3. On the remote control, use the arrows Arrows to select the Settings icon Settings.
  4. Use the arrows to highlight the Blu-ray Disc player icon Blu-ray Disc Player Icon, and then press the EXECUTE Button EXECUTE Button on the remote control.
  5. Use the arrows to highlight "System Settings", and then press the EXECUTE Button on the remote control.
  6. Use the arrows to highlight "System Information", and then press the EXECUTE Button on the remote control.
  7. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.
    Firmware Version
    If the last three digits of the version number are 769 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

How To Get the Firmware Upgrade

There are two ways to upgrade the firmware for the Blu-ray Disc player built into the TV:

  • Network Upgrade:
    • The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Network Upgrade method.
    • You will need to connect the television to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    • Please see the Network Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.
  • Disc Upgrade:

If you have questions or require assistance, please contact the Customer Service Center in your country.

Network Upgrade Instructions

The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Network Upgrade method to upgrade the Blu-ray Disc player firmware.


  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player (built into the TV).
    • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the television or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the television correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
      Note: If you cannot connect the television to your Internet source, please see the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section below for information about firmware upgrade disc options.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

  • Firmware Upgrade Instructions

    WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.

    Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

    1. Connect the "LAN" terminal on the television to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    2. Power on the television.
    3. If there is a disc in the player, please remove the disc.
    4. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Settings" - Blu-ray Disc Player" - "Network Update" and then press the ENTER button.
    5. The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
    6. Select "OK" and then press the "OK" button.
    7. The download process starts and the message, "Software update has started. Never turn off power while performing update." is displayed on the television.
    8. The download process continues and the message, "Updating the software. The TV cannot be operated during the update." is displayed on the television.
      WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the television until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    9. When the firmware upgrade is complete the message, "The software update is complete. Please select "OK" to power off the TV." is displayed on the television.
    10. Select "OK" to restart the television.
    11. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 769, the firmware upgrade was successful.

  • Network Firmware Upgrade FAQ
    Q: "An error occurred during the software update. Please update the software using Network Update in Blu-ray Player Settings." is displayed on the TV. A: Follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.

    If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please use the disc upgrade method.

    Q: The power was shut down during the upgrade process. A: Power on the television, and then follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again.

Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc

If you cannot connect the television to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.

    • If you have difficulty creating a disc, or if you require assistance, please contact the Customer Service Center in your country.
    • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the television or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the television to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware upgrade. The player may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
      Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
    • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
      • Microsoft® Windows® 7
      • Microsoft® Windows Vista®
      • Microsoft® Windows® XP
      • Macintosh® OS X v10.6.3
    • A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
    • After you create the disc, please see the Disc Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

  • Download and Disc Creation Instructions
    1. Download the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP file is 39,559,158 bytes.
      1. Right-click the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP file, and click "Properties".
      2. On the "UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "37.7 MB (39,559,158 bytes)".
        Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
      3. If the file size is different than the "39,559,158 bytes", please download the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP file again.
    3. Double-click the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP file to extract the firmware files to a temporary directory (please note this directory for reference).
      Note: Two files will be extracted: MSB03-FW.BIN and MSB03-FW.ID
    4. Write the two extracted files to the root of a CD-R. Please consult the instructions for your CD writing software for details.
    5. The upgrade disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize CD (No further writing possible)" in your CD burning software to finalize the upgrade disc.
      Instructions for how to burn the upgrade CD using utilities that came with your operating system.
    6. If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.

Disc Upgrade Instructions

The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using a disc. The steps are the same whether you downloaded the firmware and created the disc, or whether you ordered the disc from Sony.


  • Firmware Upgrade Instructions

    WARNING!! Do not power off the television or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the television to the point of requiring repair.

    WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the television to the point of requiring repair.

    Note: The firmware upgrade process takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

    1. Power on the television.
    2. Place the upgrade disc into the disc slot.
    3. After the disc is loaded, the message, "Perform version upgrade?" is displayed on the television.
    4. Use the remote control to select "OK", and then press the "OK" button.
    5. The download process starts and the message, "Software update has started. Never turn off power while performing update." is displayed on the television.
    6. The download process continues and the message, "Updating the software. The TV cannot be operated during the update." is displayed on the television.
      WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the television until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your television being unresponsive and requiring repair.
    7. When the firmware upgrade is complete the message, "The software update is complete. Please select "OK" to power off the TV." is displayed on the television.
    8. Select "OK" to restart the television and eject the upgrade disc.
    9. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 769, the firmware upgrade was successful.

  • If The Upgrade Disc Does Not Eject

    If the upgrade disc does not eject even though "FINISH" is displayed, please follow the steps below.

    1. Switch the display to TV mode (view a TV program).
    2. Press the "Eject" button, while simultaneously pressing the "Stop" button on the television.
    3. After the disc is ejected, power the television off and disconnect the AC power cord.
    4. Reconnect the AC power cord, and then power on the television.

    Disc Firmware Upgrade FAQ
    Q: "Failed to load the disc. Please insert the disc again." is displayed on the television. A: Please reinsert the disc.
    Q: "Perform version upgrade?" is not displayed on the television when the upgrade disc is inserted. A: Remove the upgrade disc from the television and delete the upgrade files from your computer. Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc and then follow the steps in the Disc Upgrade Instructions section to install the firmware upgrade.
    Q: The power was shut down during the upgrade process. A: Power on the television, and then follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again.
Q: "An error occurred during the software update. Please update the software using Network Update in Blu-ray Player Settings." is displayed on the television. A: If you have an active Internet connection, please use the Network Update method. If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact the Customer Service Center in your country.
Q: When I double click the UPDATA_M03R769M.ZIP upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the MSB03-FW.BIN and MSB03-FW.ID files are not created. A: The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc
Q: The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes. A: Please contact the Customer Service Center in your country.
