Before You Start


How to Check if You Need the Update

  1. Press the "HOME" button, select "Settings", and then tap the General Settings General Settings Icon icon.
  2. At the "General Settings" screen, select "Firmware Version".
  3. At the "Firmware Version" screen, if the firmware version displayed is 1.12 or higher, you don't need this update.

Important Notes

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the unit during the upgrade process. Doing so may damage your receiver and make it unusable and require a charged repair.
  • To prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process, it is recommended to perform this update with the car engine running. Before starting the update process with the car engine running, be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place and keep the engine running until the update is complete. This update takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  • This update requires a computer with an Internet connection and a USB storage device that's 200MB or greater.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install


Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device

  1. Download the SONYXAV_CB21.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference) on your computer.
  2. Extract the update file from the SONYXAV_CB21.zip file.
    • For Microsoft® Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, or Windows 8 operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the SONYXAV_CB21.zip file, and then click "Extract All.

        Note: For Windows 8, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder. To locate the Downloads folder, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.
      2. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
      3. A new folder will be created called "update".
        Note: Verify that the new folder name is "update". If it is any other name, rename the folder to "update".
    • For Windows XP operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the SONYXAV_CB21.zip file, and then click "Extract All.
      2. At the "Extraction Wizard" dialog box, click "Next".
      3. Click "Next".
      4. Click "Finish".
      5. A new folder will be created called "update".
        Note: Verify that the new folder name is "update". If it is any other name, rename the folder to "update".
    • For Mac OS® X operating system:
      1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the SONYXAV_CB21.zip file.
      2. A new folder will be created called "update".
        Note: Verify that the new folder name is "update". If it is any other name, rename the folder to "update".
  3. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer and transfer the update file to the USB storage device.
    • For Windows operating system: Go to the directory where the folder was created, right-click the update folder and, from the menu, click "Send To...", and then click the drive (EX: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB device. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.
    • For Mac OS X operating system: Drag and drop the update folder to the root folder of the USB device.
    Note: This update will not be performed if the update folder is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the folder or the SONYXAV.BIN file contained in the update folder is modified.
  4. Remove the USB device from your computer.
  5. Please continue to the next section.

Update the System Software

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the unit during the upgrade process. Doing so may damage your receiver and make it unusable and require a charged service.
  • To prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process, it is recommended to perform this update with the car engine running. Before starting the update process with the car engine running, be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place and keep the engine running until the update is complete. This update takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  1. Connect the USB storage device containing update folder to your receiver.
    Note: Make sure no other USB memory device is connected to the unit.
  2. Power off the unit by pressing the OFF button on the remote commander or press and hold the SOURCE button on the front panel for one second.
  3. On the mobile A/V receiver, press the "HOME" button, select "Settings", and then tap the General Settings General Settings Icon icon.
  4. At the "General Settings" screen, select "Firmware Version".

    Note: Check the current firmware version. The firmware version "1.00" is subject to this update.
  5. At the "Firmware Version" screen, tap "Update".

  6. To start the update, tap the "UPDATE" button.

    Note: The system will automatically reboot several times. Do not shutdown the system.
  7. IMPORTANT: Do not remove the USB storage device or shutdown the system before the update is complete and the message "Firmware Update Success!!" is displayed.

  8. After the firmware update completes, press and hold the OFF button on the remote commander (or press and hold the SOURCE button on the front panel for two seconds) to power off the unit.

    IMPORTANT: Before the unit is powered back on, wait an additional ten seconds or more (use of clock recommended) to ensure the unit is off. The touch panel may not function if you skip this step.
  9. Remove the USB storage device.
  10. Press the "Source" button to power on the receiver.

The firmware update is complete.

Confirm the Successful Update (optional)

  1. Press the "HOME" button, select "Settings", and then tap the General Settings General Settings Icon icon.
  2. At the "General Settings" screen, select "Firmware Version".
  3. At the "Firmware Version" screen, verify that the firmware version is 1.20.
