Important Notes

  • WARNING!! After performing this update, it is not possible to return to or install a previous version of the system software. By downloading and installing this update, you acknowledge that you understand this update cannot be reversed.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the TV to be unresponsive or require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the TV or disconnect it from the AC power source during the upgrade process. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the TV to be unresponsive or require repair.
  • All user settings are retained during the firmware update.
  • To download the update, a USB storage device, such as a Sony® Micro Vault® device, or something similar, is required to perform the update. Sony is aware that not all USB storage devices are compatible with our TVs. If you are using a USB device for playback of photos, music, or videos on your TV, the same USB device type should work for the update. If the software update is not successful after following the instructions, you may need to format your device to the FAT32 file system, or use a different device. View formatting instructions.

How to Check if You Need the Update

Please follow the steps below to check your television's software version to determine if it needs this software update:

  1. Power on the TV.
  2. On the TV remote control, press the "HOME" button to display the Menu screen.
  3. On the remote control, use the arrows Arrows to select the Settings Settings icon, and then press the OK OK button button.
  4. Use the arrows to highlight the Setup Product Support Icon icon, and then press the OK OK button button.
  5. Use the arrows to highlight "Product Support", and then press the OK OK button button.
  6. Use the arrows to highlight "Contact Sony", and then press the OK OK button button.
  7. Check the Software Version displayed on the Contact Sony screen. If your software version is v2.101 or higher, your TV does not need this update.

Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device

  1. Download the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference) on your computer.
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file is 73,907,276 bytes.
    1. Right-click the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file, and click "Properties".
    2. On the "sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "70.4 MB (73,907,276 bytes)".
      Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
    3. If the file size is different than the "73,907,276 bytes", please download the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file again.
  3. Extract the update file from the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file.
    • For Microsoft® Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, or Windows 8 operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file, and then click "Extract All.

        Note: For Windows 8, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder. To locate the Downloads folder, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.
      2. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
      3. A new folder will be created called "sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth"
      4. The new folder will contain the "sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg" update file
    • For Windows XP operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file, and then click "Extract All.
      2. At the "Extraction Wizard" dialog box, click "Next".
      3. Click "Next".
      4. Click "Finish".
      5. A new folder will be created called "sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth"
      6. The new folder will contain the "sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg" update file
    • For Mac OS® X operating system:
      1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth.zip file.
      2. A new folder will be created called
      3. The new folder will contain the "sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg" update file
  4. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    View formatting instructions.
  5. Transfer the update folder to the USB storage device:
    • For Windows operating system: Go to the directory where the folder was created and double-click to open the sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth folder.
    • Right-click the sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg file and, from the menu, click "Send To...", and then click the drive (EX: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB device. The update file will be copied onto your USB device.
    • For Mac OS X operating system: Open the "sony_tvupdate_2013_2101_sbf_auth" folder, and then drag and drop the sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg file to the root folder of the USB device.
    Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.
  6. Remove the USB device from your computer.
  7. Please continue to the next section.

Update Verification (optional)

Updating the Software

WARNING! Do not power off the TV or disconnect it from the AC power source during the upgrade process. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the TV to be unusable and require repair.

WARNING! Do not press any button, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage your TV and make it unusable and require service.

This software update takes approximately ten minutes to complete. It is recommended you completely read the instruction below before beginning the update process.

  1. Power on the TV.
  2. Insert the USB storage device containing sony_fw_2013_2101_ABAS2.pkg file into the USB port located on the back of the TV.
    Note: The USB storage device can only be inserted into the USB port slot one way.
  3. Disconnect the TV power cord for resetting.
  4. Reconnect the TV power cord, and then power on the TV using remote control or the POWER button on TV.
  5. The POWER indicator will be green for about 30 seconds, and then the indicator will start blinking slowly in amber. After several minutes the update will finish and TV will turn on automatically.

    CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE USB DEVICE OR TURN OFF THE TV UNTIL THE UPDATE IS COMPLETE.

  6. Remove the USB device from the TV.
  7. Unplug the TV power cord, and then reconnect the TV power cord to complete the update.
  8. The firmware update process is now complete.

Please follow the steps below to verify that the software was successfully updated:

  1. Power on the TV.
  2. On the TV remote control, press the "HOME" button to open the TV Home Menu.
  3. On the remote control, use the arrows Arrows to select the Settings Settings icon, and then press the OK OK button button.
  4. Use the arrows to highlight the Setup Product Support Icon icon, and then press the OK OK button button.
  5. Use the arrows to highlight "Product Support", and then press the OK OK button button.
  6. Use the arrows to highlight "Contact Sony", and then press the OK OK button button.
  7. Check the Software Version displayed on the Contact Sony screen. If your software version is v2.101, the update was successful.

Possible Issues During Upgrade

  • Issue: The STANDBY indicator is flashing red.

    Resolution:
    1. Verify your USB device is in good working order and perform the download process again.
    2. Power off the TV by pressing the POWER button on the TV set, and the press the POWER button again to power on the TV.
    3. Proceed with the installation process again.
