Preparation

  • This lens system software update can only be performed when the lens is attached to the camera.
  • Be sure to attach the target lens to the camera body before starting this update.
  • Make sure the camera is turned off when attaching the lens.

Check the System Software Version of Your Lens

Follow the instructions below to check the lens system software version:

  1. Select MenuSetupSetup OptionVersion.
  2. The lens system software version is displayed.

Notas:

  • If the system software version is Ver.03 or earlier, the update is required.
  • If the date and time setting screen appears when you turn on the camera, be sure to set the date and/or time to the correct values.
  • If you are using the QX series, start the Lens System Software Updater on your computer and check the lens system software version by running the update.

Important Notice

  • Do not connect the camera to the computer at this point.
  • Please close any other applications before updating.
  • Do not remove the battery during the update as the sudden loss of power may render the camera inoperable.
  • Avoid letting your computer go into sleep mode.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera before updating.
  • When connecting the camera to a computer, make sure you connect it directly to the computer (not using a USB hub or other device).
  • Please use a computer connected to the internet.

For α Interchangeable Lens Cameras

  • When performing the lens system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack or ​the dedicated AC adaptor (sold separately).

For Professional/Camera — Broadcast & Production

  • Use the dedicated AC adaptor when updating.
  • Please ensure that the battery and AC adaptor are removed before the lens with the update is attached.

Confirm the USB Connection Settings:

Following the instructions in the Lens System Software Updater window

  1. Select MenuSetupUSBUSB Connection Mode.
  2. Check that Mass Storage has been selected.
    If a different mode is selected, change it to Mass Storage.

For Mac Computers with an Apple Silicon Processor

For Mac computers with an Apple Silicon processor, please change the security policy.

How to Download the Sony Camera Driver:

  1. Visit the Sony Camera Driver download page and download the appropriate driver:
  2. Click the Download button.
  3. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
  4. Save the file to the computer desktop (recommended).

How to Download the Lens System Software Updater

  1. Click the Download button.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
    Nota: The Update_SEL200600GV4D.dmg file will start downloading.
  3. Save the file to the computer desktop (recommended).

Once the file has downloaded successfully, you're ready to install the update.

Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver

  1. Close all programs currently running on your computer.
  2. Double-click the Camera_Driver_2110a.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
    Nota: If you already connected the camera to a computer, disconnect it before following the procedure.
  3. The Sony Camera Driver Installer will expand.
  4. Double-click the SonyCameraDriver.pkg icon.
  5. The installer screen opens. Proceed as instructed.
    Read the Introduction displayed on the screen and press the [Continue] button at the bottom right of the screen to proceed.
  6. You will be asked to allow the system to start installing the new software. Type the password for the administrative account, then click Install Software.
    Enter it in the Password field in the center of the screen, and press the [Install Software] button at the bottom right of the screen.
    Notas:
    • If the operating system displays the “System Extension Blocked” dialog message, click the Open Security Preferences button. The macOS Privacy & Security screen opens.
      Nota: The actual dialog message will vary depending on the operating system version. Extension here refers to Sony Camera Driver.
    • If the operating system does not display the “System Extension Blocked” dialog message, go to Step 2: Start the Lens System Software Updater.
  7. Press the Allow button in the Privacy and Security section of System Settings. If you cannot find the Allow button, try scrolling down the screen.
  8. If you are asked to restart after clicking the Allow button, please restart and return to the beginning of the update procedure.
  9. If the Security and Privacy screen does not disappear, please close the window.

Step 2: Start the Lens System Software Updater

  1. Double-click the Update_SEL200600GV4D.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
  2. Double-click the Update_SEL200600GV4D folder that appears on your computer Desktop folder.
  3. Double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon.
  4. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account, then click OK.

  5. The Lens System Software Updater window appears.

    Notas:

    • If the system is not ready to start updating, an error message appears. Take appropriate action according to the message, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.

    • If the message “You need to restart your computer appears, restart the computer, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.

    • If the message “You need to install Sony Camera Driver appears, perform the procedure described in Step 1, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
    • If the message “Check the Security & Privacy setting.” appears, perform steps 7, 8 and 9 in the Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver section, restart the operating system, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
  6. Turn on the camera and connect it to your computer using a USB cable.
    The USB connection screen will appear on the camera.
  7. Click Next on the Lens System Software Updater screen. The Lens System Software Updater window appears on the computer and “Follow computer instructions.” appears on the camera screen.
    Nota: From now on, never turn off the camera until the lens system software update is complete.
    Depending on the camera model, it may take a few minutes for the screen to change.
    • Computer screen:
      Check the version screen
    • Camera screen:
      Follow computer instructions screen
    Troubleshooting:
    • If the message “The update is not available for your model” appears, check if the lens system software file you are trying to install is the correct file for the lens that is attached to your camera.
      If the Lens System Software Updater is running, you will need to close the updater, disconnect the USB cable, turn off the camera, and go back to Step 2.
    • If the message “Could not find camera with the lens for this update mounted” appears, check if your camera is listed in the Relevant Products section and connected to the computer with a USB cable.
  8. Click Next in the Lens System Software Updater. The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the screen. If the current lens system software version is Ver. 04, the update is not required. In this case:
    1. Stop the USB connection and click Finish.
    2. Turn off the camera.
    3. Remove the battery pack and/or the AC adaptor.
    4. Reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adaptor.
    5. Turn on the camera.
    • An update is required
      The [Current Version] on the lower left of the screen is showing 03 or earlier, and the [Version after the update] is showing 04.
    • An update is not required
      The [Current Version] and the [Version after the update] on the lower left of the screen are showing 04.
  9. Confirm the Current version is Ver.03 or earlier, then click Next. The data will transfer to the camera. The process takes approximately 5 seconds.
    Nota: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while updating.
  10. When the data transfer is complete and the following screen appears:
    Run the update screen
    Click Finish.
  11. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera (approximately 60 seconds).
  12. The update process is finished when the “Lens update complete” message is displayed on the camera. If you are using the QX series, the screen disappears when the update process is finished.
  13. Disconnect the USB cable.
    Nota: After the update is finished, turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adaptor, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera.

Step 3: Confirm That the Lens System Software Version Is Ver.04

  1. On the camera, select Menu SetupSetup OptionVersion.
  2. The lens system software version is displayed.
    The version will be displayed in the center of the screen.

Questions & Answers

The Update Does Not Complete

If the Monitor Remains Black for More Than 2 Minutes, Follow These Steps to Troubleshoot the Issue:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Remove the battery and AC adaptor from the camera, leave it for a few minutes, and then insert the battery again or reconnect the AC adaptor.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Turn on the camera and perform the installation process again.

After Launching the System Software Updater, the Screen for Confirming the Version Does Not Appear and a “Failed to Update” Message Is Displayed

If This happens, It Is Possible You Have Updated Your Camera in the Past Using the System Software Update Helper Driver. Follow These Steps to Uninstall That Software and Restart the Update:

  1. Download the System Software Update Helper again and uninstall the driver using the uninstaller tool in the Uninstaller folder of the downloaded file.
  2. After uninstalling the System Software Update Helper driver, double-click the Update_SEL200600GV4D.dmg file to restart the update.
